The Speculative Research Agency is an organisation from 2221 , organising multi-species expert panels to discuss the most influential research on all sorts of technological phenomena of the century.
In the last months of Terrestial Year 2021, SPERA has teamed up with Mattia Thibault and Oz Buruk – leading the twin courses “Creating Futures in Art, Science and Business” at Aalto University and “Design From the Future, Citical, Speculative and Fictional Design” at Tampere University” – to reunite ambitious teams of young researchers, designers and all sorts of creatures to illustrate some influential examples of speculative research. The teams (aka the students of the courses) have been confrontes with a specific theme, Augmented Life-forms, and have realised the following projects.
Athene Design – Understand your pet
The team Athene Design described a device that allows owner and by-standers to visualise the live emotions of their pets, which is making human-animal communication easier and seamless. Or is it?
You can see some of the possible consequences of using such technology is this video sketch.

Future Folks – Potatotopia
The Future Folks team imagines a potato-powered – and potato-centric – future. But while the tuber-energy has reshaped the electricity industry, not everyone is happy in potatotopia…
